That doesn't automatically mean more hospital beds equal better healthcare. In fact, Korea faces its own challenges involving healthcare utilization, workforce distribution and the balance between hospitals and primary care.
But it does illustrate the scale of Korea's medical infrastructure.
For many patients, specialized healthcare is physically accessible without traveling enormous distances.

The OECD's latest health indicators show Korea with a life expectancy of approximately 83.6 years, above the OECD average of 80.3 years in the cited dataset. Korea's cancer mortality rate was also below the OECD average in that comparison.
The OECD's 2025 assessment also reports that 70% of eligible women in Korea were screened for breast cancer, compared with an OECD average of 55%.
Korea also performs well on several measures of preventive care and healthcare access.
These indicators do not mean the Korean system is perfect.
No healthcare system is.
But collectively, they demonstrate that Korea has developed a sophisticated healthcare system capable of producing strong population-level outcomes.

This doesn't mean everyone should travel to Korea for medical care.

Acknowledging those challenges doesn't diminish Korea's accomplishments.
In fact, it makes them more meaningful.
Korea's healthcare system is impressive not because it is flawless, but because of how much it has accomplished in a relatively short period of time—and how aggressively it continues to evolve.
