City of Austin Launches $23 Million in Creative Grants: Opportunities for Korean Artists and Businesses

AUSTIN, TX (July 2026)—The City of Austin Arts, Culture, Music and Entertainment (ACME) division has officially opened applications for a massive $23 million grant initiative aimed at supporting local creative individuals, cultural organizers, and small businesses.

Funded entirely by the city’s Hotel Occupancy Tax (HOT) revenues—meaning tax dollars collected from out-of-town visitors are being directly reinvested into the local community—this program offers financial awards ranging from $5,000 to $250,000. Because these are grants, this is free financial funding that does not have to be paid back.

The city has intentionally simplified the application process and expanded multilingual support to ensure that immigrant communities, including Central Texas Korean creatives, have an equitable path to securing these funds.

What are the Funding Programs?

The $23 million fund is divided into four distinct grant tracks, depending on your creative field and organizational setup:

  1. Elevate Grant: Supports individual artists, cultural organizations, and creative groups that produce public events or creative content in Austin. Grants range from $15,000 up to $80,000 based on your budget size.
  2. Austin Live Music Fund: Tailored for local independent musicians, bands, and music venues looking to fund performances, recordings, or operational needs.
  3. Thrive Grant: Offers deep, long-term operational investments (up to $250,000) for culturally rich, community-rooted nonprofit arts organizations.
  4. Heritage Preservation Grant: Dedicated to individuals and practitioners focused on preserving cultural heritage, historical archives, and traditional cultural arts.

How Can the Korean Community Benefit?

Many small business owners and independent contractors in our community assume city "arts" grants are only for traditional painters or museums. In reality, Austin’s definition of a "creative business or individual" is highly practical.

You or your business may qualify if you have at least a two-year history of creative work in Greater Austin and operate in areas such as:

  • Commercial Media & Design: Freelance graphic designers, digital media producers, videographers, and independent K-beauty content creators who produce publicly accessible digital media.
  • Traditional & Culinary Arts: Instructors teaching traditional Korean dance, calligraphy, instruments (like gayageum), or cultural culinary arts who host community-facing workshops or public demonstrations.
  • Musicians & Sound Engineers: Classical performers, modern indie musicians, church music directors organizing public concerts, and sound production engineers.
  • Creative Small Businesses: Independent print shops, recording spaces, or creative consulting firms that provide support services to local artists and cultural events.

Overcoming the Language Barrier: Fillable Korean Templates

To directly support applicants with limited English proficiency, the City of Austin has introduced dedicated language-equity resources for this cycle.

When you log into the application portal, the city provides downloadable, fillable application templates translated into Korean. This allows you to review the questions, prepare your business details clearly, and ensure nothing is lost in translation before submitting.

How to Apply and Get Free Help

The application window is open from now until Tuesday, August 18 at 6:59 p.m. CST. All selected projects will begin the contracting phase in January 2027.
