In Search of the Holy Grail of BBQ: An Austin Food Exploration

When you think of Texas, you think of BBQ, and when you think of BBQ, you think of Texas! The BBQ culture in this region is deep and rich. Living in Austin, BBQ is a must for family outings and when hosting guests from Korea. In this article, I will introduce recommended BBQ spots that Korean residents can utilize for hosting guests, family gatherings, or exploring Austin.

Our Neighborhood's Pride, Interstellar BBQ

This is a well-known restaurant even among Koreans. It's great for family outings and perfectly suitable for guiding guests from Korea. In particular, Korean guests often ask, "What was the name of that place?" after visiting, making it something of an 'ambassador' for Austin.

Riverside Romance, County Line BBQ

Located next to Lake Austin, County Line is especially recommended for guests from afar. The Colorado River visible through the large windows, guests arriving by boat, and the sunset views… Add to that moist brisket and ribs, and it becomes not just a meal, but 'a time to experience Austin.'

Austin's Legend, Rudy's

Rudy's, with its unique concept of "a BBQ joint attached to a gas station," has chain locations throughout Texas, but the original is right here in Austin. Ordering meat by weight and having it wrapped directly in paper is a system rarely seen in Korea.

The prices are reasonable, and side dishes like creamed corn are excellent, making it the most recommended place for those new to BBQ.

Full of Country Charm, Salt Lick

Salt Lick, located in Dripping Springs, is a bit of a drive, but it's a frequent spot for Austin residents to take guests. The BYOB (bring your own beverage) culture, the beautiful scenery during bluebonnet season, and the generous portions of meat enjoyed on family platters… If you want 'real Texas BBQ,' this is a must-visit.

Hidden Gems Downtown

  • Franklin Barbecue: A place where people from all over the U.S. visit like pilgrims. However, be prepared to wait in line for 3-4 hours.
  • La Barbecue, Terry Black’s: Recommended alternatives to Franklin. Terry Black's beef ribs, in particular, are popular with everyone, young and old.

Tips for Enjoying BBQ (Know-how from local experience)

  1. Visit on a weekday early-Avoid weekend lunches.
  2. Choose Moist Brisket-The rich flavor comes from here.
  3. Don't rely on sauce-Good BBQ is delicious enough without sauce.
  4. Don't forget the side dishes-Enjoy with cornbread, creamed corn, mac and cheese, etc.
  5. Eating order-Starting with flavorful sausage and finishing with brisket is the classic way.

Living in Austin, BBQ somehow becomes a part of everyday life. BBQ is indispensable when hosting guests, with family, or at gatherings with friends!
